Basic Home Security Tips

As much as  anything else, home security is a matter of good habits.   When did you last forget to lock your windows and doors ? What about forgetting to secure all those little sheds and outbuildings ? Look around your property , does it feature many different hiding spots – like trees that are tooclose to  doorways and back windows?

Here’s  another question -   When you’re not home does your house look deserted or does it appear that someone is home ? Do your neighbors know how to reach you ?  You can learn some good home security habits.  To begin , this is a few ideas:

Basic Home Security Tips

    * Whenever spot something suspicious in your neighborhood - ask about it.

    * Just use your surname and your initials on mailboxes , in the phone book and on your building directory .  This is most important if you’re female. And don’t draw attention to the fact, if you live alone .

    * Never forget to lock your windows and doors .

    * Use a wide angle door viewer, a one inch deadbolt and a heavy duty safety chain on our door.

    * Remember don’t undo the safety chain when someone comes to your door until you decide to let them in.

    * When you move into a new house or apartment , get the locks changed .

    * If you lose your keys or your purse is stolen, change the locks.

    * Without exception, check the ID of anyone you don’t know who is looking to get you to open the door and do it BEFORE you undo the security chain

    * Keep interior and exterior lights on.

    * Install security lighting and cameras to cover your your driveway, backyard and also covering t your front, back and side doors . Pay attention to dark corners.

    * If you’re home looks like it has been broken into , stay outside .  Go to a neighbor and call the police.

    * On the phone , never say that you’re alone.

    * Don’t get on an elevator with someone even remotely suspicious .

    * Avoid the stairwell in your apartment if you’re alone .

    * If you’re travelling , make arrangements for your house to look like someone is at home . Either stop your mail/newspapers or have a reliable neighbor pick them up .

    * Ask your friends and neighbors to keep an eye on your house.

    * On a different note, if you have kids and a pool, get a swimming pool alarm.
